Over the past two posts, we learned about the 1898 Lynching of South Carolina Postmaster Frazier Baker and his infant daughter Julia. We learned of the investigation and arrests of over a dozen accused in setting the post office ablaze and shooting nearly every member of the Baker family.
On the night of February 21, 1898, a mob set fire to the post office and home of the Baker family. Frazier Baker, the father, as well as his infant daughter, Julia, were killed and burned. His wife and several of their children were shot and wounded.

What follows is an interview of former slave, Tom Hawkins. It was conducted in 1938 as part of the Federal Writers' Project. Mr. Hawkins, interviewed in his mid to late 70s when he lived in Athens, Georgia. After a short introduction by the interviewer, Mr. Hawkins tells his own story.
On this date in 1889, eight black prisoners were removed from jail and lynched in Barnwell County, South Carolina. There had recently been two murders of white men in the area. Two of the prisoners were charged with murder, and the rest were held either as witnesses or accessories.
During the Civil War, the Federal government created the American Freedmen's Inquiry Commission. They were tasked with interviewing former slaves who had been set free by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Over the course of several months, the AFIC commissioners traveled through the South and into Canada conducting their interviews.
